At The Digital Arts Experience, we pride ourselves on taking a collaborative, hands-on approach to technology and connected learning. For teens, during Spring & Fall, our courses run after school. One class that we are currently running once a week is “Minecraft Modification w/ Java”. What is Minecraft, you wonder? According to the always trustworthy source, ‘Wikipedia’, Minecraft is:
It is all the rage among kids and adults alike. Our web designer/coding instructor Mark, who happened to rather fall into teaching this custom-designed class, is having a lot of fun with it. The kids had originally come in with the intent of learning 3D Animation, but through sitting down and chatting with them, we discovered that Minecraft is something they love – so why not have them learn something that they would be completely interested and engaged in? So far, it has been quite the success! Mark comments on the conception of the class, how the kids have adapted to it, and their progress:
“These kids, at 12 years old on average, are making MASSIVE progress learning how to program Java. Their project is to make a mod for the game MineCraft, and they love this game, so they’ve been hyper-motivated by this project. I showed them how to track down the code they need, and since then they’ve been making huge strides with little involvement from me. The class runs like a lab, so I teach them a few concepts every week, give them the occasional nudge in the right direction, and help them track down the more tricky problems. The ideas are all theirs. Most of them had zero coding experience previously, so I’m very proud of what’s going on. It’s been a cool experience.”
A little bit more on Mark:
“I am a technology enthusiast and a perpetual student. The technology landscape is always changing and evolving, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I graduated with a BA in Computer Science and with a minor in Music from SUNY New Paltz. In the years since then, I have worked as a software developer/analyst in a large corporation. This has helped me to feel comfortable with both the theory behind writing great apps and how that theory applies to the real world. In my free time I enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming, kayaking, and rock scrambling. I have a passion for Science and Math, and I also dabble in performing music, audio production, and writing.”
The Digital Arts Experience is a community learning center for teens, adults, and small businesses. We strive to provide a unique, collaborative, and most of all, fun environment in which our students can learn hands in the field of digital arts with the most up-to-date software and technology.
