I will be the first to admit, it took me a while to get on the Twitter bandwagon. Prior to starting The Digital Arts Experience I saw no reason to use it. Who cares what Steve had for breakfast? Who cares that John is sitting in the park? From my perspective, it seemed a place to share useless happenings with the world and hope that someone is listening. That all changed, however, due to the influence of Cristin Grogan, Blogger, Social Media Strategist, Digital Media Manager of Iona College and of cristingrogan.com.

With Cristin’s guidance, it became very clear to me how powerful Twitter is when building a brand. With the right strategies in mind, it can be used to create powerful brand advocates that generate new business through online word of mouth. It can be used to connect with customers and listen to what they are saying, both positive and negative. Needless to say, Cristin totally changed my outlook on Twitter and now I am an addict.

Today, Twitter turns 7. I heard this on the radio this morning on my way to The DAE, and thought back to an event I attended yesterday keynoted by Chris Dessi, CEO of Silverback Social. During his talk he presented a statistic that states: every 2 years we create more information than we did from the dawn of civilization up until 2003. He stressed to the group of upwards of 100 business owners that social media is a cultural shift and using it is not a choice; it is a necessity. I think about how in only 7 years Twitter has completely changed the way and the rate in which we share information.

One can find news, happenings in music, pop culture, art, and anything else on Twitter and the information is up to the minute. If there is a car accident on 95 and traffic is dead stopped, people will be tweeting about it. If there is an incident with a celebrity, people will be tweeting about it. If your favorite band just announced a new album, people will be tweeting about it. Twitter is a live conversation that is constantly happening about anything and everything, and while the information being shared isn’t always accurate off the bat, it is quick to be corrected.

What’s more is you have the ability to join the conversation. If you disagree with someone’s review of your favorite band’s new album, you can say so. If you’ve had a bad experience with a certain brand or company, you can directly tell them, and any company that is using Twitter actively will be listening. You have the ability to listen to your customers and interact with them to enhance your brand.

In it’s blog post today, Twitter said:

“As we’ve grown, Twitter has become a true global town square — a public place to hear the latest news, exchange ideas and connect with people all in real time. This is where you come to connect with the world at large. Get on your soapbox to critique elected officials, or go sotto voce to the neighbor next to you. And as in other gathering places, commerce happens too (and jokes and art-making and debating, and — you get the idea).”

It only took 7 years to become the “global town square” and completely change the way we share information. Twitter has approximately 200 million users, nearly all of who are actively listening and participating in the conversation.
