Anna Nixon, a student who gives her perspective of education from her family’s story on why education is important, her nonprofit STEAM organization, and most of all how she can make a difference in the future of education for young students like herself.
Before diving into Anna’s perspective we need to know what education is and a few reasons why it is important from the ‘University Of The People’ article.
What is Education?
Education is the deeper understanding of obtaining knowledge and learning a variety of subjects. These all can apply to our everyday lives. Overall, education is limitless and can be applied throughout situations outside the classroom.
Here are a few reasons why education is important and how it will be a benefit to your future.
- Stability: Education provides stability that no one can take from you. Your degree will hold more weight than a high school diploma. It also greatly increases your chances of landing the job of your dreams and opening more opportunities along the way.
- Equality: Education gives people who are less fortunate a chance to succeed. There are so many options for students to attend free or low-cost programs. The University of the People says, “everyone would be able to have an equal chance at higher paying jobs — not just those that are already well-off.”
- Confidence: Having self-confidence is the key to anything in life, but especially when it comes to your academics. Having confidence within yourself allows you to express your views and speak your mind more clearly.
- Make Your Dreams Come True: Education is a powerful weapon. With it, you can make dreams a reality with the hard work and dedication that you’ve put into your education. You’ve worked so hard to get here and there’s no way you’re turning back now!
Anna’s engaging life story mirrors these powerful reasons why education is important.
Around the holidays in 2018, she and her family reminisced about old photos when they were younger, in particular this one taken around 15 years ago with her grandmother, her, and her younger sister.
Now my grandmother grew up in a small village in India. In a time where access to education was extremely limited, especially for young girls.
Her grandmother was told to stop going to school in 4th grade, but she begged her parents to stay in school for one more year and they allowed her. Then, at the age of 19, she got married, and at 25 she was raising 3 children.
Because my grandma never got the chance to complete her education, she made sure her mom did, and so at the age of 19 my mom had the choice between education and marriage. She was able to choose to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and to get a Master’s Degree in Computer Science.
After completing college, her mom was able to move to the United States, land a job, marry her father and raise their family. Anna’s grandparents always remind her that, “Anna, remember to study hard the most valuable thing that anyone can own is knowledge.” Anna always finds inspiration in her family’s story and uses their guidance to start her own!
She co-founded a STEAM Educational Program called STEM4Girls which is dedicated to young girls that want to pursue an opportunity in science, technology, engineering, and math. Similar to programs at The Digital Arts Experience, STEM4Girls also presents science and technology in fun and exciting ways. They partner with local organizations, host workshops with kids in the U.S., and most importantly provide funding and mentoring for a variety of STEM programs so that more students can begin exposure at a young age. Learning is a two-way street, you often gain just as much, if not more, when you’re teaching others as she learned at STEM4Girls.
That’s why it’s of utmost importance that we all work to give every child no matter their race, gender, or wealth access to hands-on learning opportunities in a variety of fields. The more that they can experience, the more that they can understand.
Education shouldn’t be taken for granted. Some people don’t have access to proper educational facilities or even resources. Education is so important for our children, since they are our future. Not only does education help people get a good job, which is what our nation thrives on, but it can also help people become better citizens, know right from wrong, and be kinder to one another.
